SPEAKER BIO

Nikki is a Learning Scientist and educational technology researcher focused on the design and development of education technology and digital pedagogies that support experiential learning. Nikki has been designing and delivering experiential learning programs since 2002 and has delivered experiential learning programs within higher education institutions from both the faculty and program manager perspective.

A shift in focus in 2014 leads her to an Instructional Designer role at Practera where she invested six years designing technology-enhanced experiential learning programs and was part of the R&D team, where she brought the educator perspective into the development of the technology itself. In parallel to her role at Practera, Nikki completed her Doctor of Education at The University of Liverpool in the UK where she examined how learning theory and learning analytics could be integrated to better support teachers using experiential learning-based pedagogies.

Upon completion of her thesis, she transitioned into her current role as a Learning Science Researcher at Northeastern University where she focuses on the development of a technology-enabled virtual internship and virtual team-based project that leverages real-time learning analytics to support experiential learning facilitation. Nikki has published papers and presented her work at ASU/GSV, the National Society for Experiential Learning Conference and various international conferences including Learning Analytics & Knowledge Conference, World Association for Co-operative Education and the International Society of the Learning Sciences Annual Conference.

Nikki is passionate about the role emerging technologies like learning analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning can play in providing equitable access to experiential learning for traditionally underserved students and students in low resource economies. But also understands and is cautious of the potential negative impact these technologies could have if they are not designed with quality of learning, equity of access and scalability all held in mind. As a result, she is a strong advocate for teachers, learning scientists and instructional designers being an integrate part of the education technology development process.
